McDonald’s creates tiny restaurant replica for bees

McDonald’s has created a tiny replica of one of its restaurants, designed specifically for bees.

Teaming up with advertising agency Nord DDB, the smallest McDonald’s restaurant – the McHive – is a fully functioning beehive designed to look like a McDonald’s restaurant and features seating and a drive-thru.

Built by set designer Nicklas Nilsson, the miniature restaurant is part of an initiative that has seen beehives placed on certain Swedish branches of the franchise.

A McDonald’s spokesman says: “Some McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden have beehives on their rooftops. The initiative started out locally with one franchise last year and has grown to more restaurants joining the cause to celebrate the initiative, which is part of McDonald’s Sweden sustainability work. Bee populations have been declining worldwide and this is one effort to help keep pollinators pollinating.”

Christoffer Rönnblad, marketing director of McDonald’s Sweden, adds: “We have a lot of really devoted franchisees who contribute to our sustainability work and it feels good that we can use our size to amplify such a great idea as beehives on the rooftops.

“This beehive is a tribute to franchisee Christina Richter’s initiative.”

The beehive was auctioned during a charity fundraiser on 21 May and was sold to a Swedish franchisee.
