Alternative career with a franchise

After a successful career in the Royal Marines and managing security businesses in the Middle East, Matthew Cawthorne decided it was time to be his own boss.

Matthew’s career with the marines had taken him to more than 60 countries and, after early retirement in 2008, he spent nine years working in Iraq. In 2017 he and his family decided it was time for him to work and live in the UK.

After 35 years of working for others, Matthew wanted an alternative to employed roles on returning to the UK. It was an Iraqi friend’s interest in franchising which led Matthew to attend The British & International Franchise Exhibition in March 2018. Matthew comments:

“I went to the exhibition on behalf of my friend, to gather information about franchising and to explore the different brands for him. It was at the event that I realised a franchise would be the ideal path for me to set up a business and generate an income – and to do it quickly.”

Having met The Alternative Board (TAB) at the event and continued discussions with them afterwards, Matthew attended a discovery day at their head office in Harrogate. His experience confirmed to him that it was the right business for him.

“From the very first conversation at the event, all the way through, I found the approach of TAB to be transparent and genuine. I was very impressed with the team and their passion for helping the businesses they serve to thrive.”

After completing a thorough two-part training course, Matthew launched his franchise on 1 July 2018, becoming TAB’s local facilitator for the Three Rivers area, including Watford, Amersham and Gerrards Cross.

“The support I have received from TAB, and continue to benefit from, is second to none. At my own pace, but with their advice when I need it, I am building a business that will serve me for years to come. On a personal level, I get immense satisfaction from bringing valuable learning moments to as many people as possible. It’s, honestly, marvellous – I feel reborn!”
