Richard heads for £1m milestone in the Midlands

Richard Scandrett has run the Drain Doctor Franchise in Birmingham North and Wolverhampton for over eight years and now employs eight team members, servicing over 200 clients.

Before joining us in 2010, father of two Richard enjoyed a successful career in IT and telecoms sales roles, in addition to six years at Yellow Pages, before deciding to put his skills to work for himself.

Looking for a business opportunity that would enable him to make the most of his commercial and managerial experience, Richard was attracted by the reputation of the Drain Doctor Plumbing brand and the chance to build a company that could become the ‘go to’ partner for local domestic and commercial clients.

Richard has invested a lot of time and thought in growing his franchise. His top piece of advice for other franchisees is to recruit technicians based, not just on ability, but on attitude and personality too. Richard says: “Stability of the team is very important and with the right people the skills are easier to train. Our technicians are often the first and last point of contact for customers, so it is vital that they represent the quality and personality of our brand.”

Richard plans to increase his number of technicians and vans by one a year, to grow revenue to £1.2m by 2022 and to take on ever larger projects. His mission is also to become the most trusted plumbing and drainage organisation in the Midlands and to continue to offer great employment opportunities to other motivated men and women.

Richard says: “I’ve always been a hard worker and have had some great jobs but the time definitely comes when you realise that you are more than capable of being your own boss and master of your own destiny.

“For me, what’s great about running a Drain Doctor Plumbing franchise is that it combines a traditional service industry that will always be in demand with the opportunity to create, develop and grow your own business. All of this with the support and ‘been there, done that’ expertise of Head Office and your fellow business owners.”
